Beskrivelse

The Imperial War Museum Collection features rare and fascinating original films preserved in the Museum's archives. Many have never been released to the public before and are presented here, complete and uncut, for the very first time. These films are of great historical importance and are essential viewing for anyone interested in the Second World War. During the Second World War, the Royal Air Force Film Production Unit filmed the RAF in action in every theatre of operations. Cameramen risked their lives alongside pilots and aircrew to bring back some of the most vivid and memorable combat footage of the war. From 1943 onwards, this film was used to produce regular newsreels that were shown on RAF bases around the world. These newsreels were known as the GENS and GAFS. This unique DVD two disc collection features the complete set of these newsreels, mastered from superior 35mm prints. Many of the newsreels featured have never been released to the public before. The collection comprises six hours of film of the RAF at war from Europe and the Middle East to Burma. From Typhoon ground strikes with rockets to Lancaster bombers pounding U-boat pens and from Beaufighters attacking German shipping to 'Hurri-bombers' over Mandalay, the GENS and GAFs provide an unrivalled account of RAF operations. Just a few of the other highlights are precious film records of the attack on the battleship Tirpitz, sorties against the V-1 Flying Bombs, coverage of Arnhem and the RAF's own retrospective account of the Battle of Britain. There is also much rare footage of aircraft types and fascinating behind-the-scenes accounts of life on wartime stations.
